Sustainable Innovations: Smith & McLaurin’s Commitment to Reducing Waste and Protecting the Environment
News 06 Apr 2023
At Smith & McLaurin, we view sustainability as not merely an obligation, but a responsibility that we hold towards our environment, our customers, and future generations. We acknowledge the potential for industries to strain natural resources, and as such, we are dedicated to leveraging innovation to make a positive impact on the environment and become a driving force for change in our sector.
Over the last 12 months, we have made continuous improvements in waste reduction, including plastic waste. However, we understand that waste reduction alone is not enough. we need to focus on activity that will minimise waste in its entirety. One of the most critical ways we have done this is by using less raw materials in our manufacturing processes, which results in fewer trees being cut down to make paper pulp. This is not a theoretical tree, but an actual one.
We are proud to say that we have carried out three projects to reduce waste from our most wasteful manufacturing machines: slitting, cores, and teardowns. These projects have resulted in saving the equivalent of 30 football pitches filled with trees every year.
We are also proud to announce that our commitment to sustainability has resulted in an annual sustainable cost saving is more than £250,000. This demonstrates that being environmentally responsible is not just the right thing to do, but it is also good for business.
It is essential to note that sustainability is not just about substituting plastic with paper. It’s about using fewer resources and protecting the environment. At Smith & McLaurin, we understand that trees are the lungs of the earth. The more trees we can save, the better it is for the environment and the planet. By reducing waste, we are not only reducing our environmental impact, but we are also saving trees that would have been cut down to make paper.
Work with our specialist team
When it comes to sustainability, we strongly recommend that brand owners work directly with packaging material suppliers, machine manufacturers, and converters so these separate components can assemble to maximise routes and flow wrap packaging opportunities.
